Now It’s Getting Stupid

Hi Everyone,

Okay, I’m starting to feel like I’m just pissing in your ear about the same thing over and over, but I once again need your help.  ANOTHER author on fafiction, net has stolen massive amounts of my stuff (from multiple stories this time) and put them in her Eric/Tara story.  It’s called Element of Blood by Carmel Muse, and from about Chapter 8 onwards, it’s just one huge ripoff.

Check it here.

A reader clued me into this woman on another fan site and I had them take it down, but she was writing under a different name and a different title.  I told her to take it down, which she didn’t, so the administrator did it for me.  I’ve written to her again on FFN to take it down, but it would be great if anyone who feels like it would go PM or review her and let her know that you’re aware she’s a thief.

I’m so sorry, guys.  I hope you’re not too tired of my drama.  Honestly, this rash of plagiarism is starting to make me sorry that I ever wrote fan fiction in the first place.  What’s the point if people are going to swoop in and steal whatever they want because they’re too lazy and talentless to write their own ideas?

Any help to get it off would be much appreciated.  Thank you!

Heather

    Dang girl. Again!
    Geepers! I feel for you!
Gah theft is theft. I just don’t get them!

Unfortunately another case of plagiarism, please go help her out taking the story down.

Damn, I feel for you. If it’s any consolation, the fact that so many people try to steel your work means it’s really good 😉 But of course that’s no excuse.

Have left negative review on plagiarist’s story. Sorry it’s happened to you again Hun. They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery…but I’m not so sure any more 😦

Dear heather, have reported it that story to FF as plagiarism but it is so badly written it hurt to read!

I agree!!! I read enough to just find a clear example of a significant section being plagiarised but the rest hurt my eyes…

At least we have the consolation that copy-pasting from other works + random word substitution does not lead to a good story or quality prose…

    • ficlit78 says:

I know right? It was incoherent most of the time. Random POVs, jumps from first to third person and past to present tense. It just sucked. There were also parts that I KNOW I’ve read in other stories, I just don’t remember which. Lame.

  6. redjane12 says:

Don’t feel bad for reporting this again. I think you should be thanked for doing so as you are helping many others who do not have the knowledge, time, network etc. to protect their work….

Plagiarism in fanfic is happening because (as you more eloquently explained in an earlier post), there is a huge general misunderstanding about whether fanfic stories are protected against plagiarism or not. Many may think because it is derivative work it is not protected…

So…. the way I see it is that you (and everyone denouncing and stopping plagiarists) are establishing new ground where original writers of derivative works are protected and where people will think twice before ripping other authors’ work off…

I did report on this story already giving a quote from Pretty Kitty Chapter 4 (where Eric and Sookie agree their ‘deal’) that is obviously ripped off in Chapter 10 of the Elements story. The ‘author’ has substituted words here and there in a calculated effort to avoid being found via searches but it is plainly obvious when you read both scenes side by side.

Thank you for taking this on and helping so many others!

    Another tale of plagiarism…so frustrating.

  8. Meridian says:

I’m sick of the blatant (if horrendously done) plagiarism, not you, so DO let us know every time it happens.

I am so sorry this happens to you. It feels like a violation. I do understand how tempting it is to stand in the shoes of truly talented people such as yourself, but it is just wrong! It doesn’t diminish you. But it certainly diminishes them. Hope your holidays were wonderful.

  10. I’m sorry you are dealing with this again. I don’t blame you for your frustration. I hope that you don’t stop writing. The ironic thing is that online stuff is so easy to steal–a cut and a paste. But it’s also easy to “find.” People who have read your work and then read the hacked stuff “know.” I’m so glad they are telling you when they find it.

The more we find and “exile” plagiarists, the fewer people will be tempted to steal. At least–that is what I hope.

That’s a little consolation, but–still–I cannot imagine how frustrated you are.

    Kat

Your FanFic is the absolute best out there. There is no comparison that I’ve found and I’ve read way more than I care to admit. So, yeah, of course people want to claim it as their own. Having said that, because your FF is so memorable and amazingly unique, it’s painfully obvious when someone else grabs and uses your scrumptious words. So why anyone even attempts it is beyond me. Okay, on my way to defend your honor with another plagiarist. Lol. I’m very sorry you’re going through this again.

  12. ozzo says:

Sorry this keeps happening. As for you being sorry you ever delved into fan fiction, please don’t be, your story was wonderful to read, you have made great friends through your creative work that is not too shabby of an outcome. Just keep doing what you are doing and remember the positive.

Not just stupid, but ridiculous too.

  14. msbuffy says:

Along with everyone else, I thank you for reporting this every time it happens. BertieBott was able to have not just stories removed from FF.net, but the “writer” removed from the site entirely with her informal protest letter that many writers and readers ‘signed’. Check out her site for an example and perhaps do exactly what she’s done. We can do more as a group than just singularly. The more these thieves are caught, the less chance they may take in the future. With all the reading that so many of us do, how stupid can they be?

    • ficlit78 says:

Thanks for the idea, buff. If they don’t take it down, I might just do that. It’s already been taken down from the second site I found it on, so it’s really only matter of time. I don’t know how fast FFN moves on this kind of thing, but hopefully it’s quick.

      • msbuffy says:

I sent them an email yesterday about it following their instructions on how to report abuse. They want it sent to them via snail mail, but screw that. They’re an Internet site so they can get it through an abuse report. You have to report the plagiarizer as an “infringer” and include the sentences they instruct as well as the “infringer’s” site address and story name and the original writer’s screen name, site address, and story from which the infringer plagiarized. I did all of that and pointed out that it is against their own TOS and specifically where; Section 6, Articles B-F, and Section 7, Article A, I believe. I don’t remember if I kept a copy if it now though! Damn fibro fog! I’ll look through my files to see because that’s what I would normally do! I also mentioned Bertie’s informal protest and how that could very simply be done once again as well as the fact that FF.net is losing readers/members because they are not adhering to their own TOS; therefore, how is a writer to trust that their work will be protected as they claim?
I just pretty much ripped them a new one in as much legalese & diplomacy as possible for you, kid! I’m so sick of this bullshit! 🙂

  15. Maria says:

Just went and read some of the story….it is disgusting…almost word for word your work. I made sure to leave her a nice message:) but please don’t stop writing! You’re incredibly talented and it’s such a joy to read your work. When I discovered pretty kitty it took over my life! Lol

  16. You got it. I’m on it.
You know me as SexyVampires4all, ive written many a review to you on ff.net 🙂
    Love all that you do!

  17. I’ve posted a “shame on you” review to her story, though I don’t know how much impact it will have, given that your removal requests to her have been ignored. Maybe some of her “fans” will see it and realize what a fraud she is.

I’m so sorry you’re having to deal with this. On the one hand, it’s a testament to how fantastic and widely-read your writing is, but on the other (dominant) hand, it’s just plain wrong!

  18. mazzablue says:

I have posted a “review” on the stolen work. Just remember as bad as all of this is, you have a mahoosive fan base (there are a good few authors who do) and we will all shout and comment in support of this,no matter how many times you need us to.

Again – argh.. Feel free to inform us, everytime this shit happens to you.My ‘review’ on this story is already posted. Stay strong, you know – more than 5000 reviews for PK can’t go wrong. Keep this in mind, Heather.
    Love you – Kerstin.

  23. VictoryInTrouble says:

I’m so sorry this keeps happening to you. Don’t feel bad bringing it to our attention. It makes me really angry to read a work that was plagiarized without my knowledge. So, it’s good for people to be alerting others and getting it taken down. Once again, I am amazed at the brazen lack of morals and the stupidity of my fellow humans. Hope this gets taken care of soon. Has it been reported to ff?

It’s just ridiculous that this keeps happening. I don’t understand why people feel the need to rip off someone else’s work. It only disheartens everyone who writes the wonderful stories to begin with and makes them hesitant to continue writing. Frustrating to say the least!

  25. It’s awful that it’s happened to you again..
I do not understand the mentality of plagiarists and the victim mentality some of them have when they’re caught.

  26. missron80 says:

On the one hand it is extremely flattering and a testimony to your talent that so many people feel free to ‘borrow’ your work. On the other hand, it is extremely disrespectful and I can’t believe people think that it is ok to just go ahead and steal the hard work of someone else. Are people so lazy? Are people so desperate for attention that they will steal in order to generate reviews and comments? You know I have your back on this one……

I still cannot believe the blatant disrespect people show when they steal someone else’s hard work and attempt to pass it off as their own. It happened to me in the days before the internet and was by pure chance I discovered it. Now, in this age of Google and plagiarism checkers etc, I find it hard to believe that people are this stupid. Yes, unfortunately, many people get away with it but I am hoping that as more and more people become aware of the issue, that many more will get caught. Fanfiction IS protected. Fanfiction writers DO have rights. Those who steal fanfiction works need to understand that it WILL NOT be tolerated.

  28. missron80 says:

ps. I reported the story directly to fanfiction.net also……

  29. tcathimme says:

I’m so sorry this happened to you…again. But, please don’t stop writing. It’s one of my guilty pleasures to see your name in my email inbox with a story update. I love your take on Eric and Sookie very much.

  30. tcathimme says:

I will go to fan fiction and add my displeasure to your cause.

  31. ficlit78 says:

Hi Guys! Several people have made the brilliant/duh observation that reviewers can report the story as stolen. Please scroll to the bottom of her story and do so under Report Abuse! I’ll write FFN tonight if the story is still up and send an official complaint, but meanwhile, votes matter. I’ll write a longer thank you when I’m not at work! 🙂

  32. missron80 says:

Might be wrong but it looks like its gone. Yay!

EEEW Tara/ERIC THATS JUST WRONG then to steal someones elses stuff
